The Imperial County Sheriff’s Office lost one of its officers in a car crash on Saturday evening. The car accident occurred around 7.30 p.m. when 25-year-old Deputy Anthony Redondo was responding to a mental health call in Seeley.
He was driving a marked patrol vehicle westbound on Aten Road, east of Forrester Road. At the same time, a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado pulling a fuel trailer was traveling southbound on Forrester Road north of Aten Road. Both the vehicles were driving at unknown speeds when they crashed into each other at the intersection.
According to California Highway Protocol (CHP), six passengers were travelling in the Chevrolet Silverado when the accident occurred. Out of the six, two passengers suffered serious injuries and had to be air lifted to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. The remaining four including the driver suffered minor injuries. Deputy Anthony Redondo died at the scene of the crash.
The crash is currently being investigated by the California Highway Patrol’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT). The cause of the accident is still not known. Redondo was hired by the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office in September 2020, he was in office only for nine months. He is survived by his parents and siblings.
